"New IPCC Report Reveals Urgent Need for Climate Innovation"

(EIT Climate KIC, 2021)

"We are behind a decade of extreme heat, record high sea levels and extreme weather events."

(World Meteorological Organization, WMO, 2020)
In December 2019, EU leaders supported the goal of making the EU climate neutral by 2050. To date, human activities are estimated to have caused about 1,0°C of global warming above pre-industrial levels. Global warming is likely to reach 2030°C between 2050 and 1,5 if it continues to increase at current rates. (IPCC Special Report Global Warming of 1.5 °C) Despite many promises and efforts by governments to eliminate the causes of global warming, CO emissions have2 from energy and industry, after signing the United Nations Convention on Climate Change in 1992, increased by 60%. IEA, 2021 Global commitments and measures are being strengthened, but they are still far from what is needed to limit the rise in global temperatures to 1,5 C and thereby prevent the worst effects of climate change. IEA, 2021 Despite a brief drop in carbon dioxide emissions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the world is still on track to increase temperatures by more than 3°C this century - well beyond the targets of the Paris Agreement.
