A pilot project Production and use of biochar on farms for the purpose of soil improvement and contribution to mitigating climate change, is implemented as part of measure M16: Cooperation from the Rural Development Program 2014-2020, sub-measure 16.5 Support for joint action to mitigate or adapt to climate change and for joint approaches to environmental projects and sustainable environmental practices.
While in the past agriculture was faced with the challenge of increasing food production, today we are faced with new challenges of how to reduce the environmental burdens caused by agricultural activity with the same or even increased food production. Recently, biochar has been researched and mentioned as one of the possible solutions. Biochar helps to improve the soil, as it retains carbon in the soil for hundreds of years, helps the soil retain water and nutrients so that they are not washed into the groundwater. It is also used as a fertilizer additive, for processing manure and slurry, as an additive for silage and as a feed additive.
The goal of the project is the production of high-quality biochar on the farm, the activation of biochar and the use of activated biochar. A newly developed pyrolysis furnace will be used for the production of biochar, which was developed as part of the RRI 2 project in a Slovenian company. In the project, we will demonstrate the production of biochar (whose characteristics will meet the requirements of the EBC standard), the activation of biochar and the use of biochar in a pilot growth experiment, with which we want to demonstrate the positive effects of the use of biochar on agricultural land.
