The importance of urban green spaces for climate adaptation and biodiversity is currently not given enough attention in CZ and AT. Green spaces, including gardens, in built-up areas have important ecological functions (microclimate, habitat for insects) and also influence people’s quality of life (adaptation to climate change). At the same time, the municipal administration can determine how these areas are designed and maintained. In the future, the ecological function of these green spaces should also be taken into account in this direction.
Public administration can fundamentally influence public opinion. It is the key to success in raising awareness about environmental issues in urban areas. These are burdened by development and climate change. There is increasing dehydration and a lack of near-natural green spaces to retain water and contribute to natural cooling. Finally, natural corridors are disappearing (or are much too small), which serve as a habitat for songbirds, mammals and insects, which are valuable for ecological balance, pollination and natural pest control. Municipalities and cities try to solve this problem by making citizens, associations and the like involved. However, sometimes they do not use the right tools and measures to even get the community to intervene in the problem.
The project aims to connect those actors who have or could have an impact on the entire community. These include, in particular, state administrative and self-government organizations, municipal services, training institutions, non-governmental non-profit organizations that work with the public and youth, and last but not least, local action groups that work on municipal planning and strategic plans for the development of administrative areas.
The main output of the project is a cross-border network of actors in the field of biodiversity-promoting and drought-adapted green space design and maintenance, etc. Bioeconomics in which all project partners and numerous other actors are actively involved.
This project was funded by INTERREG V-A Austria – Czech Republic.
