BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC: “STAYING COOL IN BRNO” INITIATIVE

In response to increasing summer temperatures, Brno has launched initiatives focused on energy-efficient housing and cooling strategies. The city is investing in retrofitting public and private housing to improve thermal performance and reduce cooling needs.

Actions include:

  • Retrofitting old residential buildings with improved insulation and energy-efficient windows to reduce cooling demand during heatwaves.
  • Planting green roofs and installing cool roofs that reflect more sunlight to reduce the urban heat island effect.
  • Integrating solar energy systems into the housing sector to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Climate Resilience Impact is focused on reducing the energy consumption for cooling during increasingly hot summers, and better indoor air quality during heat events. The use of green roofs helps mitigate flooding and reduces the overall temperature in the city.

Brno’s approach to combining housing retrofits with urban cooling strategies is particularly relevant for cities facing rising temperatures due to climate change.
