ALMADA’S LESS CARBON CLIMATE FUND – CITY OF ALMADA, PORTUGAL

In the early 2000s Almada began focusing on sustainability and climate action.

The Almada Less Carbon Climate Fund was launched in 2009 as part of the city’s climate strategy aimed to consolidate and channel financial resources towards projects that mitigate climate change and promote sustainability. The initial funding was sourced from the municipal budget, with support from national and EU funds. Early projects focused on energy efficiency improvements in municipal buildings, installation of solar panels, and the development of green spaces.

From 2013 on the Fund expanded its scope to include support for private sector and community-led projects. This period saw increased participation from local businesses and residents, with projects such as retrofitting homes for energy efficiency and promoting sustainable transportation options.

As of 2016 the Fund became a revolving fund _ Almada Less Carbon Climate Fund, (r)Evolved. Again a way forward, combining financing mechanisms, citizen power and private investment. The Fund began forming strategic partnerships with national and international organizations, securing additional grants and technical assistance. These partnerships enabled larger and more impactful projects, such as the development of renewable energy infrastructure and comprehensive water management systems.

The Fund has significantly contributed to Almada’s climate goals, achieving notable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption.
