Brno has developed a smart traffic management system that integrates real-time traffic data, prioritizing public transport and optimizing traffic flows to reduce congestion and emissions. The system is part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable urban mobility by making public transportation more efficient and reducing the reliance on private vehicles.
Brno is also improving cycling infrastructure and expanding park-and-ride facilities to encourage a shift to more sustainable modes of transport. Brno transportation department also collects the bike traffic intensity data from several sources. They have bike traffic intensity sensors on the major cycling thoroughfares and get the data from a “Bike to work” event, where thousands of people record their daily trips to work for the entire month of May. The Strava app provides recreational biking data, and they also survey the streets every two years. All this biking data is then used to plan new cycle lanes and paths and assess the current ones.
