The Prague Zero Waste initiative focuses on reducing single-use packaging by encouraging citizens to bring their own reusable containers to shops, markets, and food service establishments. The municipality collaborates with local waste management companies, retailers, and citizens to promote the reduction of disposable packaging through reuse systems and collaboration with shops that support package-free shopping. In Prague, the concept of packaging-free shopping has gained significant traction through initiatives like Bezobalu, a non-profit organization that operates shops offering goods without packaging. Bezobalu, which translates to “without packaging,” allows customers to purchase various food products, such as dried fruits, legumes, cereals, and even household items like soap and shampoo, by bringing their own containers or using reusable options provided at the store. The first shop, located in the Vinohrady district, has been so successful that it has expanded, now serving as a model for other stores across the Czech Republic. Customers are encouraged to bring their own containers to reduce waste, and the store also supports local producers, further reducing the environmental impact of transportation and packaging. Additionally, the online supermarket Košík.cz offers packaging-free groceries in collaboration with local company MIWA, delivering products in 100% recyclable materials and allowing customers to return the packaging for reuse. This pilot project features a variety of bulk items, and there are plans to expand the offering to include more products if the trial proves successful. Bezobalu has been supported through awareness campaigns, partnerships, and indirectly through sustainability policies set by the city. Prague’s municipality also encourages local businesses to adopt similar models through grants and by fostering collaboration between local NGOs, businesses, and public institutions to reduce waste. Additionally, Prague has launched broader initiatives under its Sustainable Development Strategy that align with the goals of zero waste and packaging-free shopping. These city-led efforts often include funding opportunities or promotional support for businesses that contribute to reducing packaging waste and encouraging a circular economy. Although Bezobalu and similar shops primarily operate through non-profits or private enterprises, they benefit from a supportive policy environment created by the city. Prague’s waste reduction efforts include public-private partnerships and collaborations with businesses like Košík.cz, which further helps in reducing packaging waste in the city.
