KAUNAS, LITHUANIA – FOOD WASTE REDUCTION CAMPAIGN

The Kaunas Food Waste Reduction Campaign forms part of broader efforts to address food waste in Lithuania, focusing on both households and public sector policies. A key initiative, the project “Let’s Not Waste Food,” led by the Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers, involves collaboration with stakeholders from Finland and Denmark to explore methods for reducing avoidable food waste, particularly targeting young consumers.

The project conducted research and tested interventions in food waste behaviour among young people. It also provided guidelines for policy makers and stakeholders on implementing food waste reduction strategies in households.

The initiative was funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and local government, focusing on research and community-based campaigns.

Although specific statistics regarding waste reduction achievements are still being compiled, early results indicate significant improvements in public awareness and behavioural changes among younger populations, contributing to a reduction in household food waste, thus engaging young consumers through targeted educational programs and partnerships with academic institutions proved effective in addressing food waste issues.
