Budapest launched the MOL Bubi bike-sharing system, offering an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to motorized transport. The MOL Bubi bike-sharing system in Budapest has proven to be a highly successful initiative since its launch in 2014. The system was significantly upgraded in 2021, which resulted in a substantial increase in usage. Here are some key performance indicators (KPIs) and outcomes from the initiative: The MOL Bubi service has achieved over 10 million rides as of mid-2024. Following its 2021 relaunch, the bikes were used 850,000 times in just a few months, far surpassing earlier usage records. On peak days, there are 10,000+ daily rides, placing Budapest’s system on par with those in larger cities like New York and Barcelona. Currently, MOL Bubi operates with 2,460 bicycles and 211 docking stations across the city. A recent survey highlighted that 57% of riders use Bubi for commuting to work, while others use it for shopping or leisure. MOL Bubi 3.0: The city has announced plans to launch Bubi 3.0 in 2026, which will expand the service further by adding more stations and electric bikes to accommodate growing demand. Due to high demand, the city plans to double the fleet to 4,500 bicycles by 2026, which will include 1,000 e-bikes. More information: |
