CITIZEN-CENTRIC RESILIENCE BUILDING – BONN, GERMANY

Bonn4Future Plan, the city’s most extensive participation initiative involved work spanning over two years, and more than 320 randomly selected citizens, stakeholders, and city experts actively contributed through special climate days, forums, and a digital sustainability platform, identifying collective ways to transform their city to become a more just and sustainable place, able to deal with the necessary upcoming large scale changes and challenges, such as natural and other disasters such as floods and heatwaves.

The outcome was the Climate Action Plan of the Citizens, which is now being integrated into the Bonn Climate Plan 2035, aiming for climate neutrality by 2035. This master plan envisions a smartly designed city that provides freshness and shade when it is hot, absorbs the water when it rains, promotes sustainable transportation like biking, and focuses on energy-efficient buildings.

City of Bonn is also part of the Daring Cities Initiative. Created by ICLEI and the Federal City of Bonn, Daring Cities is a recurring, virtual, action-oriented forum to recognize and empower courageous urban leaders – including mayors and other decision-makers, technical staff, researchers, private sector representatives, and community organizers – to disrupt business-as-usual and shift towards business-as-possible. Daring Cities showcases and catalyzes exemplary local climate action to tackle the climate emergency, including ambitious resilience-building and climate mitigation efforts.
