Zagreb has implemented a citywide resilience strategy that focuses on mitigating risks from both natural disasters (flooding and earthquakes) and climate-related events. The city has strengthened its emergency preparedness, incorporating community disaster drills, public education, and improved flood defences. This strategy is further supported by partnerships with local and international organizations to enhance the city’s disaster management capabilities. Zagreb has also addressed the issue of “Resilient Zagreb” in different CityLabs, because the Croatian capital has recently faced numerous crisis and natural disasters (pandemia, earthquake, floods). These CityLabs led to numerous discussions on how Zagreb functioned in these crises and on the city’s resilience capacities. This included issues of knowledge and capacities for crisis and professionals specialised in crisis management, knowledge of general practitioners to work during crisis and common skills and knowledge that citizens have in times of crisis. Reflections also comprised considerations of how students and volunteer groups can be engaged in crisis management and linked with mainstream services. More information: |
