GDYNIA, POLAND – SUSTAINABLE URBAN MOBILITY PLAN (SUMP)

Gdynia has implemented a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) focused on reducing car usage and promoting public transport, cycling, and walking. The city has expanded its network of cycling lanes and improved public transportation infrastructure, including eco-friendly buses. Gdynia also introduced educational campaigns to encourage residents to adopt more sustainable mobility practices.

Gdynia has successfully maintained a high level of public transport usage, with 52% of residents using public transport as their primary mode of transportation. The city’s trolleybus network, combined with buses and urban rail, has been a significant contributor to this success. The city also emphasizes the importance of clean and energy-efficient vehicles in its public transport system.

Gdynia also developed a three-level transport model, which includes macroscopic, mesoscopic, and microscopic analyses. This model helps the city optimize traffic management and plan improvements in public and private transportation. The model was built upon comprehensive traffic surveys, which allowed for detailed assessments of mobility patterns and provided data for future urban mobility planning.

Gdynia has involved its citizens in the planning process through public consultations and data collection. Surveys on citizen transport preferences help tailor mobility solutions to the needs of residents, ensuring that public transport services are demand-driven and meet the community’s expectations.
