Vienna launched a pilot project where certain streets near schools were closed to cars during peak times when students were arriving at school. The results were impressive, with fewer cars in the vicinity of schools, leading to a safer environment for students. As a result, more children started walking, cycling, or using scooters instead of being driven. This project was so successful that many more schools requested similar implementations, and it is now being expanded to additional schools across the city.
The programme also emphasizes active mobility, encouraging students to walk or cycle to school. Initiatives such as “Kids2Move” have been designed to optimize school routes for safety and encourage more walking and cycling. These efforts aim to increase the daily physical activity of students, contributing to their overall health and well-being.
By fostering safe, active, and sustainable modes of transport for children, Vienna’s Mobility Management for Schools has significantly reduced car dependency around schools while promoting healthier lifestyles for students.
