The city of Lodz has adopted blue-green infrastructure solutions to improve water management and resilience to climate change. The main environmental challenge stems from the change of a permanent river into a temporary stream due to limited urban runoff restoration, compounded by geological conditions, floods and droughts.
The municipal government has created a network of water bodies, green spaces, and wetlands to improve stormwater retention and reduce the heat island effect. The solution also includes three Infiltration basins in a form for rainwater gardens that integrate grey and green infrastructure. This helps in conserving water and enhancing the city’s resilience to the impacts of both droughts and heavy rainfall.
The project integrates climate adaptation strategies into urban planning, particularly in public housing and community spaces and is notable for its use of Nature Based Solutions (NbS).
