VIENNA’S SMART WATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME (AUSTRIA)

Vienna city has employed water conservation through digital infrastructure.

Vienna’s municipal government has developed a comprehensive smart water management system to optimize water use in the city and enhance climate resilience. The system integrates real-time data collection with AI to monitor water consumption and detect leakages quickly, improving water efficiency in both public and private sectors. The city also promotes green roofs and rainwater harvesting, which are critical for stormwater management and water conservation during drought periods.  Vienna’s dual model feeds a proportion of the rainwater back into the natural water cycle. The system is suitable for all public thoroughfares that are connected to the sewer network and have sufficient space available for infiltration basins.

Led by Vienna’s Environmental Department, this initiative is part of the broader “Smart City Vienna” project, delivering reduced water wastage, improved stormwater management, and enhanced resilience to both flooding and droughts.
