Prague’s strategic plan (Prague Institute of Planning and Development 2016), formulates a common vision of Prague’s socioeconomic development, broadly sets out to support the city’s food self-sufficiency, urban agriculture and gardening, alternative food networks, and cooperation with stakeholders in agriculture. Prague’s Climate Plan contains a whole chapter focused on food and agriculture and the city accentuates the circular economy, using short supply chains, lowering food’s ecological footprint, and reducing and reusing food waste.
Prague has launched a network of urban farms and community gardens to increase local food production and promote sustainable food consumption. The city government provides support for establishing urban farms, as well as educational programs for citizens on how to grow their own food. The initiative also focuses on reducing food waste by connecting local food producers with consumers through urban markets and direct-to-consumer sales models.
An example of this is MetroFarm Prague, supported by the local government. The project receives backing from various municipal bodies, such as Prague City Hall and local district councils, including Prague 7 and Prague 5. These local government entities assist MetroFarm by offering land for urban farming initiatives and supporting sustainability efforts. MetroFarm focuses on creating community spaces for gardening, farming, and fostering sustainable food production within the city. This collaboration reflects the city’s broader commitment to promoting urban agriculture and engaging citizens in sustainable practices, including food production and environmental stewardship.
Community Garden Kuchyňka is based on the principle of sharing the risks and rewards of gardening in the city. Kuchyňka is seated in the capital city of Prague and consists of 0,3 ha of land and roughly 20 member families. Its aim is to produce food (mostly fruit and vegetables) for up to 30 local residents and provide access to local organic farmer´s produce for many more by means of establishing a CSA group that will provide members with quality food and farmers with a community of committed partners. Among other aims of Kuchyňka is a revitalisation of abandoned space in the city and also positive neighbour relations and community building and works for integration of homeless and socially disadvantaged people to local community.
